Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System in 2025.
The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.
Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Athletes are granted the ability to contest certain decisions made by the official, following the practice already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This step arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
- Possible interference end of a rally.
Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can request.
A Recent Example
A recent case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.
Growing Trend
This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.
Further Updates
A further change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves situations where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.
In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
