This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Consider this a test for partners in committed relationships who enjoy the horror genre: Sit down with your loved one and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its online premiere via Hulu. On the surface, it could look like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together exists a profound meditation about how we choose to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have stayed together for over ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the two stars bring a particular energy to their roles, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The narrative starts when Tim and Millie transition from the metropolis to the rural area for professional reasons. A familiar narrative setup, sure, but that’s primarily where the conventions cease. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim fall into an underground cave. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity starts to affect the duo. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past simple connection.

The entire film is a slow burn fright fest, blending bits of dreamlike terrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director weaves these elements together seamlessly and presents them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and distant from his support system. He dreads the notion of completely losing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is amplified by the fact he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in Together avoids making one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

Both characters grapple with the kind of problems that come with most partnerships after ten years. At their core, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these concerns of codependency and fully committing to another person, the metaphor never feels clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that single viewers have interpreted the film as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Conversely, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could act as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the ending sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your other half and say, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu now.
