Jair Bolsonaro detained after being declared a risk of fleeing
Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.
The one-time leader was sentenced of orchestrating a military coup in the ninth month and sentenced more than over two decades in prison, but he continued under house arrest pending legal challenges.
Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after recent developments emerged.
This included trying to remove his ankle monitor and a summons to a public vigil that could enable a chance to flee".
Judicial Records Show Flight Fears
In a document approving the arrest, the magistrate said information from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the tracking monitor to ensure success in his getaway".
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the protest called by his child.
His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a legislator, called for a gathering of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.
His son wrote on digital networks on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your sofa? I urge you to struggle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so supporters could offer prayers for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the potential of the former president's transfer to embassies near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of organizing to ask for protection through a consular facility", a declaration said.
The legal document emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, the capital city, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.
Worldwide Consequences
Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative US President Trump, causing him to implement a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.
He is being detained in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will experience a detention review on the following day.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.
They also petitioned that he be allowed to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he needed ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.
Context of Sentencing
The former president was convicted of leading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, President Lula.
Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a scheme which included plans to murder his opponent and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.
The conspiracy was stopped because it didn't receive the backing of the armed forces officials. His successor was took office without problem on the first day of 2023.
But a following week, on January 8th, numerous his followers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the federal district, Brasília.
The security forces intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.
The magistrates found that the protesters had been incited by him whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, bring back stability and bring him back to power.
At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.
The former president called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him running in the next presidential race.
